Lansdowne’s Mayor Young endorses Landau for County Council

David Landau, Democratic candidate for Delaware County CouncilIn his bid for a seat on the Delaware County Council, Nether Providence Democratic Chair David Landau received the endorsement of Jane Young, Mayor of Lansdowne. Mayor Young has also accepted the role as Chairwoman of Landau’s campaign. The Delco Times has the full story.

The Times article is also notable as it includes a mention of the County race from Congressman Joe Sestak, for whose campaign Landau served as senior campaign advisor:

Sestak called Landau an “outstanding candidate in an extremely rich field of contenders.”

Committee endorses candidates for primary

The Nether Providence Democratic Committee endorsed candidates for the May Democratic primary at their monthly meeting on Thursday night. Candidates for Township commissioner, school board, and magisterial district judge addressed the committee in seeking endorsements. In addition, Nether Providence Democratic Chair David Landau spoke about his candidacy for County Council.

The Committee unanimously endorsed Landau for county council, Stephanie Klein for magisterial district judge, and Frank Daly for Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. The following candidates for municipal office and school board also received endorsements:

David Landau launches County Council bid

Nether Providence Democratic Chair David Landau addressed a crowd of almost 300 Democratic committee people at their annual nominating convention on Tuesday night. Landau, who is a candidate for County Council, talked about the campaign issues at stake, which echo on the local level many of the same themes at the local level that Joe Sestak campaigned on in his sucessful Congressional bid. (Landau served as senior campaign advisor to the Sestak campaign.) He also outlined the requirements that candidates must meet in order to obtain victory in November. He closed his speech with a promise to deliver the most vigorous contest in the County’s history.

As a result of the County Committee’s decision, there will be an open primary on May 15th. There are a total of seven candidates vying for three spots on the ballot in the November 2007 general election.

Lentz to open additional constituent office

State Representative Bryan Lentz will open an additional constituent services office in Brookhaven. The Brookhaven office opening party being held this Saturday, March 17, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Brookhaven Borough Municipal Building (2 Cambridge Road).

Lentz and his staff will be available to answer questions and hear concerns on PennDOT, PACE/PACENET, Property Taxes/Rent Rebates, CHIP (children’s health insurance) and other topics.

While on the topic of Lentz, the Nether Providence Democrats wish to extend on our congratulations to him and his wife Jennifer on the birth of their son. Joseph Thomas Lentz was born on March 13, 2007. Mother and son are reported healthy.

Earth Day events and other environmental news

Nether Providence will mark Earth Day on Sunday, April 22. Tentatively plans include a litter pickup effort and tree planting demonstration in South Media, and a project to cut vines and remove invasive plants in Furness Park. More details will be coming and will be posted on the Township website. Hold the date!

In other news…

Nether Providence received a $3,000 grant from the TreeVitalize program, a consortium that includes the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and other organizations working to protect the region’s tree canopy. The grant will be used to redraft sections of the Township code in order to provide better protection to trees in our community.

The board adopted a new ordinance that establishes limits on the amount of impervious surface that can be created on residential properties. The ordinance will help address stormwater runoff problems throughout the Township.

Cable competition comes to Nether Providence

At last week’s meeting, the Nether Providence Board of Commissioners approved a franchise agreement to allow Verizon to provide multiple services (cable, internet, and phone) in Nether Providence. New service will come on-line in two phases. The northern portion of the Township will be offered the new services in 2007, with the southern portion to follow in 2008.

Nether Providence will receive a signing fee totaling of over $15,000 to be paid over three years for granting this privilege to open up competition to consumers in our community.

Hampton Inn project debate continues

This week’s town talk summarized the ongoing debate about the proposed Hampton Inn in Media. At least one more meeting will be required to hear comments from neighbors of the Providence & Beatty Road site.

Bryan Lentz appears on Comcast Newsmakers

State Representative Bryn Lentz, who represents almost all of Nether Providence, appeared on the Comcast Newsmakers program. The interview, which mostly deals with the Governor’s health care proposal, can be viewed online.
